The City offers a wide variety of programs and workshops for adults ages 55 and over. 55+ Recreation and Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre 55+ Facility membership holders can enjoy discounted rates on select registered programming.

The following drop-in activities are free for 55+ Recreation and Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre 55+ Facility members. Non-members can join in the fun for $5.35 per visit, per program, or regular admission rates apply. Previous experience is recommended. Free parking is available. Schedules are subject to change.

Birch Trees in Watercolour

Location: Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre, 333 Erie Avenue

Paint a vibrant fall scene with a focus on birch trees. Learn different ways to paint birch trees in a colourful fall landscape. Each class will include simple step-by-step instruction to build your scene and colour layers to depict a fall forest with birch trees. We will use some fun techniques using plastic wrap, salt, a plastic card and sponges to create texture. Supplies are not included. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Landscapes in Watercolour

Learn how to compose a dynamic landscape in watercolour using a variety of methods such as wet in wet, wet on dry, dry brush and scrapping. Learn to simplify details, values and shapes to make an effective composition. All skill levels are welcome. Each lesson will start with a demonstration of a partial scene. The partial scene can be copied or can use a photo to create your own masterpiece. Supplies are not included. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Canadian Birds in Watercolour

Learn to draw and paint beautiful Blue Jays, majestic owls and other Canadian birds in an impressionistic style watercolour painting. You can learn a variety of watercolour techniques such as wet in wet, wet on dry and dry brush. Use fine brushes to capture details, create texture for feathers and add highlights. Step-by-step demonstrations and photo references will be provided each week. This class is open to all skill levels. Supplies are not included. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Ukulele Jam (age 55+)

If you already know how to play the three basic chords on your ukulele (C,F,G), then this is the perfect class for you. In this sing-a-long style ukulele class, you will learn how to play a variety of new songs. You must bring your own ukulele.

Tai Chi / Qi Gong (age 55+)

This gentle form of exercise is an introduction to Tai Chi and Qigong. Help improve your balance, muscle tone and mental well-being. You will learn a series of movements that builds on the movement learned the previous week. By the end of the 10-week session, you will be able to complete the short form of Chen Yang style Tai Chi.
